What is DriveCache?

Most of us have some sensitive information that we prefer to hide from others. It may be your documents, video, photos, software etc. Usually we keep all these files on our local and portable drives. Every time when we decide to protect some part of our information we have to choice appropriate method. In general there are two major types of security software:
- Computer and device (e.g. PDA, Flash key, etc.) access control software
- Encryption software
There are many variations and combinations of these methods, but all of them have advantages and disadvantages. This is why we have so many security software in the market.
Here are a few examples:
- Computer Access Control Software. You can set-up a password for your Windows account to login to your computer. Nobody without this password will be able to load Windows at this computer, but you should understand that all your information is saved onto your Hard Drive and if somebody unplugs it from your computer and plugs to another than all your files will be accessible! Of course, this method is absolutely unacceptable for portable drives.
- Portable drive Access Control Software. This software locks portable drive and prevent the access to any information on the drive until password is entered (i.e.: Keynesis Lockngo, U3, etc.). It works great, but all they have their limitations like: work only with some drive types and formats; you cannot use it for local drives; you have to lock drive manually, etc.
- Encryption Software. This is the most effective and safe methods to save your really sensitive information. If you want to keep your passwords, credit cards data, access codes etc. in safe you must encrypt it. The strong encryption and longer your password the safer your life. As a variant of encryption software there are very useful solutions that let you creating a virtual drive on any disks: local, portable, CD (i.e.: TrueCrypt). Virtual drive is a single file where this software keeps all information from this virtual drive in encrypted view. You can create as many virtual drives as you need and open (mount) them when necessary. The problem here is that any encryption process takes much time. One thing if you encrypt just a small file with your passwords and absolutely another if you encrypt a movie The second problem with encrypted virtual drive is that to open such drive you must install this software on that computer where you're going to use it. You cannot just run it from your Flash key. When you travel with your portable drive it may be a serious limitation.
So, what do we offer to you? DriveCache is not a panacea, but it has its unique place in security software and would like that you clearly understand how it may be useful for you before you decide to buy it.
DriveCache is a kind of drive access control software that can be used on local and portable drives.
What DriveCache does:
- It creates a Cache on your drive where you can keep your sensitive files.
- Cache is a secret section on your NTFS drive that is invisible for others. Only you know that this section exists on the drive.
- You can create / open / close and delete Caches on disks by DriveCache.
- Every disk may have just one Cache.
- When you open a Cache you set a drive letter for this Cache. It temporary creates a new disk in your system where you can install software, copy files etc.
- You can open documents and run software directly from Cache.
- Every Cache has its own password.
- You don't have to lock your drive manually. When you unplug your portable drive with opened Cache / reboot your computer or close DriveCache all open Caches are closed automatically.
- The size of Cache is limited only by drive capacity where it is created.
- All what you save and keep in Cache is invisible until you open it by DriveCache.
What DriveCache does NOT:
- It doesn't encrypt your files. If you have highly confidential files like passwords, access codes to your on-line banking system, etc. it's better to encrypt this files by appropriate encryption software.
- It doesn't work with FAT formatted disks (NTFS only).
- Cache cannot be created on drive C:
DriveCache requirements:
- Windows 2000 / XP / Vista.
- NTFS formatted drive.
- Administrator rights to create a Cache. After creating you can open and use it in User's mode.
Do you need DriveCache?
DriveCache is a cheep and effective solution for hiding your files and folder. Hiding is its major and single purpose.
You may consider a Cache as a hidden folder on your drive.
Here are a few examples how you can use DriveCache:
- You have a large collection of your photos or movies and you would prefer to keep them hidden.
- You travel with your portable hard drive and you'd like to have all your documents on this drive. In case you lose it you want to be sure that these documents will not be discovered.
- You have some very secret information. This information is very important to you and you use encrypted virtual drive to store this data. To increase security you keep thevirtual drive image file in a Cache.
- You have an archive where you backup your e-mails, documents, etc. every day. You want to keep these files in hidden view.
- You share your computer with others (family members, employees, etc.) and you want to have a hidden space for your personal files.
